The Probate office of the DC Superior Court can assist in the opening of small estates. A small estate may be opened for a decedent who died on or after April 27, 2001 and whose assets are valued at $40,000.00 or less.  A large estate may also be opened for a decedent regardless of the value of the decedent's assets.
